THERMAL INSULATION Using an infrared thermal imaging camera we took some photos to illustrate how effective our
shutters are as heat insulators. In infrared images warm objects appear orange/white, while
cold images appear purple black. The temperature range at the bottom of each photo shows
the hottest and coldest item in the image.
![]() Shown above is a kitchen window with the louvers in the fully open position. Notice the dark colour of the glass indicating the coldness of the window pane. ![]() The above image shows the same window, this time with the louvers fully closed. With the louvers fully closed a solid barrier of air is created between the window and the room. This creates what is known as a ‘Thermal Cavity’. ![]() This image shows a 3 panel shutter. The louvers of the left and right panels are fully closed, while the louvers of the centre panel are fully open. Notice the difference in temperature between the glass and the panels. ![]() This final image shows the external of a typical house. The shutters on the window to the left are closed, while the window to the right has the shutters folded back against the wall. Notice how much heat is being lost through the window without shutters compared to the window with the shutters closed. |
